Laurence Kerr Olivier (May 22, 1907 – July 11, 1989) was an English theatre and cinema actor. He is considered to be one of the greatest actors of the 20th century. Olivier won an Academy Award in 1949 for his performance in the title role of Hamlet (1948), and two honorary Awards for overall achievement, one in 1947 for his combined role as director, producer and lead actor of Henry V (1944), and a second in 1979 for lifetime achievement. He was nominated a further nine times, including for Sleuth (1972), Marathon Man (1976) and The Boys from Brazil (1978). He won many other awards, was knighted in 1947, and made a life peer of the United Kingdom, with the title of Baron Olivier, in 1970.

Olivier's last credited film role was in the "silent" (i.e., non-dialogue) film, War Requiem, as "The Old Soldier". It was released in 1989, the year of his death.
