The Killing was filmed in 1956 about Johnny Clay a career criminal played by Sterling Hayden planning one last heist before settling down and getting married. He has planned to rob the money counting room at the race track during a featured race. He starts to assemble his team consisting of a betting window teller, a corrupt cop, the track bartender, a wrestler and a sharpshooter. The plan has the sharp shooter kill the race favorite horse and the wrestler start a brawl as a distraction so Johnny Clay can enter the money counting room and rob the money. After a successful heist the team meets back at Johnny's apartment so they can divide the money. Unfortunately George the teller let it slip to his wife the whole plan and she then tells her boyfriend Val. Val and his partner Tiny shows up at Johnny's apartment to rob the robbers but George starts a shootout and in the ensuing battle everyone is killed but a badly wounded George. He then staggers out the door and drives back to his home were he shoots his wife Sherry and then dies. Johnny seeing that something bad went down in his apartment leaves. He drives to a pawn shop buys an old suitcase and puts the money in it and goes to the airport with his girlfriend Fay. When Johnny arrives at the airport he is unable to carry the bag on board due to the size so the bag is loaded onto a cart to be loaded in to the cargo hold.
