Kulsprutegevär m/1940 - 6.5x55mm Swedish

The Kulsprutegevär m/1940 (Kg m/40) is a Swedish light machine gun. It is based on German Knorr-Bremse machine gun, designed by Hans Lauf in 1933, that was adopted by the Waffen-SS as MG35/36A and produced in limited numbers. Sweden purchased the license for this weapon, but it was redesigned from the LH-33 prototype for the usage of 6.5x55mm cartridge. Svenska Automatvapen AB manufactured about 5,000 m/40 between 1940 and 1943. As the weapon showed poor reliability, it was soon transferred from the Army to the Home Guard and withdrawn from service after the WWII. In 1944 480 Kg m/40 were donated to the Norwegian troops (called "police units") in Sweden.

The Kg m/1940 is a gas operated, air-cooled, automatic-only (unlike the selective-fire German version) weapon that fires from an open bolt.

Note: the Kulsprutegevär m/1940 was classified as a light machine gun on Swedish service, and no reliable source refers to it as an "automatic rifle".
