The movie shows the everyday life of a British squad under the command of Capt. Denis Stanhope (Colin Clive) in 1918, 3 days before the German Spring Offensive ("Operation Michael"). On this eve of battle the young Lt. Raleigh (David Manners), an old school friend, is assigned to his company. Stanehope is engaged to his sister and is afraid that he will tell her his broken state. Then Raleigh is send to a trench raiding mission and meets the horrors of war.

The movie has been filmed several times again: A German version from 1931 under the title "The Other Side", the 1976 British-French war film Aces High directed by Jack Gold based on the plot and the television film adaptation of 1988. In 2018 a new cinema adaptation was released.
