Insomnia (2002)

Insomnia is a 2002 thriller starring Al Pacino as Will Dormer, a sleep-deprived LAPD detective who travels to Alaska to investigate a murder in a small town. The film co-stars Robin Williams as Walter Finch, a novelist who could provide the key to solving the murder, and Hilary Swank as Ellie Burr, a young Alaskan police officer who looks to Dormer for guidance. The film was directed by Christopher Nolan and is a remake of the 1997 Norwegian film of the same name.

The following weapons were used in the film Insomnia:

WARNING! SPOILERS AHEAD!

Smith & Wesson 4505

The Smith & Wesson 4505 is the primary sidearm of LAPD Detectives Will Dormer (Al Pacino) and Hap Eckhart (Martin Donovan). Coincidentally this rare 4506 variant (only 1200 units made in 1991) has been used by Robert De Niro, the actor often compared to Al Pacino, while in 2002, same year of "Insomnia" he also impersonated an aged LAPD veteran detective in "Showtime". Both films are marked WB, so it is possible that the weapons come from the same armory.

Det. Ellie Burr (Hilary Swank) picks up the S&W.

Walther PPK/S

Dormer also carries a Walther PPK/S as a backup weapon. He keeps it in the three o'clock position in a back holster. In the film it is referred to as being a 9mm, which it would be if it is chambered in .380ACP. The German caliber of that is 9mm Kurz (short).

Smith & Wesson Model 10

Walter Finch (Robin Williams) keeps a Smith & Wesson Model 10, .38 Special that once belonged to his uncle. Detective Farrell (Larry Holden) is shot in the leg with one in the beachfront scene. Dormer finds it and later uses it to try and frame Finch for shooting his partner Hap Eckhart. However, Finch outsmarts Dormer and passes the frame on to Randy Stetz (Jonathan Jackson).

Glock 23

Glock 23 handguns are carried by several Nightmute police officers including Ellie Burr (Hilary Swank). In their discussion of the recovered 9mm shell casing, Ellie mentions that "none of us carries a 9mm weapon or a backup weapon," which means that they are likely carrying .40 caliber Glocks. Finch is seen later holding one.

Double Barreled Shotgun

Finch (Robin Williams) shoots at Dormer and Ellie Burr with a 12 Gauge Double Barreled Shotgun at the film's climax at the fishing cabin.
