In the Heat of the Night is the 1967 crime thriller directed by Norman Jewison and starring Sidney Poitier as a respected Philadelphia homicide detective who happens to be an African-American and who butts heads with the local police chief of Sparta, Mississippi (Rod Steiger) over the murder of wealthy businessman. The film received Academy Awards for Best Picture and Best Actor (for Steiger) and would produce two film sequels as well as a television adaptation that starred Carroll O'Connor.
