Dennis Farina was a Chicago Police officer who became friends with director Michael Mann and subsequently enjoying a lengthy acting career playing law enforcement officers, notably as the tough police lieutenant Mike Torello in the series as Crime Story and NYPD Detective Joe Fontana through several seasons of the original Law & Order.
