Colt 2nd Model Derringer - .41 RF

The Colt 2nd Model Derringer is a single shot metallic cartridge pocket pistol of the "Derringer" type. The pistol was originally manufactured by the National Arms Company in the 1860, but after they were acquired by Colt in 1870 production continued with these Derringers becoming the first pistol manufactured by Colt to fire a metallic cartridge. The first guns manufactured by Colt were basically identical to the National Arms Derringer as they were actually made from surplus original parts, however the design was soon changed, changing the brass frame to an iron one and modifying the shape of the juncture between the grip and the frame (on the original National Arms pistol this was a straight join). There was also a Colt 1st Model Derringer which was manufactured concurrently (also an original National Arms Company design) which was more compact with a one piece frame/grip made from iron and a shorter barrel. This style of Derringer was replaced by the Colt designed 3rd Model, more commonly known as the Colt Thuer Derringer.
