Chouans! is a 1988 French historical adventure romance film directed by Philippe de Broca based on the 1829 novel Les Chouans by Honoré de Balzac. The story introduces us to the aftermath of the French Revolution, where the newly-created republic faces off against royalist rebels, called Chouans, led by Count de Kerfadec (Philippe Noiret). Most rebels are more desperados and bandits than soldiers, interested in robbing stagecoaches than restoring the monarchy. Yet, they manage to induce a peasants' rebellion in Brittany. Kerfadec's ward Céline (Sophie Marceau) is torn between the love and political ambitions of two young men - Aurèle (Stéphane Freiss), a noble heart and soul - and Tarquin (Lambert Wilson), a devoted Republican.
