Carroll O'Connor (1924-2001) was an American actor best known for his role as the cantankerous father Archie Bunker in the CBS sitcom All in the Family. In addition, he also had roles as American generals in such films as Kelly's Heroes and The Devil's Brigade and appeared as Chief William "Bill" Gillespie in the television series adaptation of the 1967 film In the Heat of the Night.
