Boule de Suif

Boule de Suif is a 1934 Soviet movie direct by Mikhail Romm based on the novel of the same name by Guy de Maupassant. France in 1870, at the time of the Franco-Prussian War. A stagecoach is on its way from the war zone to unoccupied France. Among the guests is a prostitute named Elizabeth Rousset, who is always called "boule de suif", or "Butterball". The fellow passengers, among them nuns as well as aristocrats and representatives of the bourgeoisie, cut her and resent her with great reluctance. When the carriage is briefly stopped and inspected by a Prussian officer, the latter tries to persuade the whore to do a "hurried encounter". Since "boule de suif" is a home-loving patriot and the Prussian officer a hated "Boche" from enemy territory, Elizabeth refuses his request.
A French adaptation of this short story was released in 1945.

Steyr Mannlicher M1888-90
French soldiers at the beginning can be seen with Austrian Mannlicher M1888-90 rifles. Unlike other Soviet movies from that time period, Gras Model 1874 are used standing in for Chassepot 1866 rifles.

A German soldier (Karl Gurnyak) (that there was no unified German state then; so actually the character role should be titled "Prussian") is armed with an out of time Mauser 98AZ Carbine instead of a period-correct Dreyse Needle Gun.
