American-180 - .22 LR.

The American-180 is a submachine gun developed in the 1960s which fires .22 LR cartridges from a pan magazine. The concept began with the Casull Model 290 that used a flat pan magazine similar to designs widely used prior to World War II. Only 80 Casull M290s were built and the weapon was expensive to produce. The American-180 is an improved version sold by American Arms, marketed to police forces. Many police agencies bought the American-180 and were used in everything to anti-riot guns to very fast firing SMG's for use in chases. These sales kept the gun in production until the passing of the Hughes Amendment in 1986 that barred the production of "machine guns", killing the sales of the 180.
