Also referred to as the St. Etienne Model 1873, the Chamelot-Delvigne Model 1873 revolver was the first modern handgun of the French Army. It was produced by the Munitions factory of Saint-Etienne from 1873 to 1886 with a total production of approximately 337,000 and was delivered in the bare metal finish. Although quickly replaced by the St. Etienne Model 1892 in front line French troops, it was largely used during the First World War and still equipped with the reserve units in 1940. It was also employed by the French resistance during World War II.
