Rock Hudson
Roy Harold Scherer Jr., better known as Rock Hudson, was an American actor, one of the most popular and prominent actors throughout the 1950s and early 1960s. Born in 1925, Hudson began his acting career after serving in the US Navy during the Second World War, gaining prominence throughout the 1950s for films such as Magnificent Obsession, All That Heaven Allows, and Giant. He also starred in a number of successful romantic comedies alongside Doris Day. As his film popularity waned in the 1970s, he began to focus on television roles, with his most successful television series being police procedural McMillan & Wife. A closeted homosexual his entire life, Hudson was diagnosed with AIDS in 1984, becoming among the first mainstream popular figures to disclose an AIDS diagnosis in 1985. He died of the AIDS-related complications later that same year, becoming the first major American celebrity to die of the disease.
