No. 2 Hand Grenade "Hale"
The No. 2 Hand Grenade "Hale" was used by the British Forces in WW1. The grenade used an impact fuze meaning that as soon as the grenade hit the ground, the fuze would detonate. The body of the grenade is made of a brass tube, it had a cast fragmentation ring. Cloth tails were fixed on the stick to stabilize the flight. There were two variants of this grenade, the No. 2 MK. 1 and the No. 2 MK. 2. Difference between the two models was the handle and the cloth tails. The MK. 1 used a 16-inch handle and one cloth streamer, the MK. 2 variant used a 7-inch long handle and multiple cloth streamers. The design was not very successful because it required a special fuze which was not compatible with the other grenades in used at that time.
The Hale also had two rod rifle grenade variants with 7mm or 8mm diameter rods. The 7mm rod rifle grenade was used by Mexico and briefly by Britain, while the 8mm rod was briefly used by France. These are not to be confused with the No. 3 Hale rifle grenade, which is specifically developed as a rifle grenade and looks very different.
