John Wayne
Marion Robert Morrison, better known as John Wayne, was an American actor, best remembered for his numerous roles in Western and war films throughout the Golden Age of Hollywood. Born in Iowa in 1907, Wayne's family moved to Southern California when he was young. Originally attending the University of Southern California on a football scholarship, Wayne lost his scholarship after breaking his collarbone in a surfing accident, leading him to work for Fox Film Corporation as a stagehand and extra. Here, he befriended director John Ford, who helped him break into film. Wayne's first lead role was in the 1930 Western The Big Trail, although he would not reach widespread recognition until Stagecoach, directed by Ford.
With over 170 credited roles, Wayne is widely considered one of the most iconic and well-known movie stars of all time. His most famous roles include Ethan Edwards in The Searchers, Sheriff John T. Chance in Rio Bravo, Lt. Col. Vandervoort in The Longest Day, Tom Doniphon in The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance, and Rooster Cogburn in True Grit. His last film role was John Books in The Shootist, which was released three years before Wayne's death from stomach cancer in 1979.
